Track laying in a tunnel
SPITZKE RIEBEL is building a new tramway section in Stuttgart
In the middle of Stuttgart-Fasanenhof residential area, although mostly in a tunnel – that is the current workplace of SPITZKE RIEBEL GmbH & Co. KG. The company from Buchloe in the Allgäu region is involved in the construction of the new Stuttgart tramway line U6.
While from December 2009 until January 2010, preparations were made for the underground track laying (e.g. unloading the rails and sleepers in the tunnel, delivering the ballast); the actual construction phase has been underway since mid-January. The track layers are laying 4,320 sleepers and 6,560 m rails in the 1,400 m long double-track tunnel. 8,000 t ballast will also be placed. Mats will be laid under the ballast in three sections. 6,800 m² of the noise insulating mats have to be glued before the ballast and track laying begin. 480 m of ballastless track will be laid outside the tunnel in the area of the two stops also to be built during this construction phase.
By mid-April 2010, SPITZKE RIEBEL GmbH & Co. KG will build the new underground section of line for Stuttgarter Straßenbahn AG (SSB). From the end of 2010, the tramway will provide a service from Stuttgart-Fasanenhof to the city centre.
With the extension of the SSB network, 6,500 residents of the Fasanenhof city district will have a direct public transport link with the inner city. Until now, the residents of the residential area built in 1960 have had to change from the bus to the urban railway to reach the city centre. The transport situation for commuters from Stuttgart's city centre who travel to work each day in Fasanenhof Ost business park will also improve from the end of 2010.
